Things you need to know if you are pregnant about fasting during Ramadan

Ramadan and pregnancy: What we want to tell you

Ramadan en Zwangerschap

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims, is a time of reflection, prayer and community. However, for pregnant women, participating in Ramadan can pose additional challenges, especially in the areas of nutrition and health. In this article we discuss the impact of fasting during pregnancy, the fluctuations in glucose (sugar) and the effects on the baby, as well as specific considerations for pregnant women with diabetes gravidarum.

Glucose fluctuations during fasting

Participating in Ramadan means fasting from sunrise to sunset, which can lead to fluctuations in blood glucose levels. These fluctuations are something to keep an eye on for pregnant women, because stable glucose levels are important for both the pregnant woman and the baby. Stable glucose is necessary for the baby's development. Irregular eating patterns can increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially for pregnant women who are already sensitive to fluctuations in their glucose levels.

The importance of nutrition during Ramadan

It is crucial to eat a nutritious and balanced diet during the non-fasting hours. This means choosing foods rich in fiber, protein and healthy fats to keep blood sugar levels stable and provide nutrients to both mother and baby. Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, legumes and vegetables are good choices because they are digested more slowly and help maintain energy levels.

Fasting with diabetes Gravidarum (diabetes)

Pregnant women with diabetes gravidarum, a form of gestational diabetes, require extra precautions. It is essential to work closely with the midwife or doctor at the hospital to determine whether fasting is safe for you and your baby. In many cases, it may be necessary to refrain from fasting to ensure health and safety. Close monitoring of blood glucose levels and adjustments to diet or medications may be necessary for women who decide to fast during pregnancy.

Binge eating during Eid-al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, is a time of joy and celebration, often accompanied by copious amounts of delicious food. It is important for pregnant women to be careful with the amount of sweet products. Eating large amounts of sugar after a period of fasting can lead to unwanted spikes in blood sugar levels and this affects the baby. Of course you can go to Eid-al-Fitr and enjoy it. However, our advice is to eat it during your pregnancy, with the advice to take small portions and take the time to really enjoy your meal.
