Pregnant with twins: everything you need to know

Congratulations, you're expecting twins! This is a unique and special experience, but it also brings unique challenges. In this blog we take a closer look at what it means to be pregnant with twins and how you can best prepare for the coming months.

What does a twin pregnancy entail?

A twin pregnancy differs from a single-baby pregnancy in several ways. Firstly, you will have more frequent medical check-ups. These take place in the hospital under the supervision of a gynecologist or specialized obstetrician. These frequent checkups are necessary to closely monitor the health of both babies and to detect any complications early.

The duration of a twin pregnancy is often shorter than a singleton pregnancy. In most cases, we wait until 36-38 weeks for a spontaneous delivery. If labor does not start on its own, it can be induced. This is because the risks for both the mother and the babies increase after this period.

Physical and emotional changes

During a twin pregnancy, your body is put under extra strain. This can lead to more intensive ones pregnancy symptoms, such as nausea, back pain, fatigue and a higher risk of pregnancy complications. You will also probably gain more weight, on average between 12 and 18 kilos. This is a normal part of carrying two babies.

The birth of twins

Between 32 and 34 weeks of pregnancy you will have a conversation about the birth. This explains the options for a vaginal birth or a cesarean section discussed. The choice depends on several factors, such as the position of the babies and your personal health history. With twins, the chance of a caesarean section is often greater than with a singleton pregnancy.

If you are pregnant with twins, you are also entitled to more maternity leave. This is often 10 weeks before and 10 weeks after giving birth, giving you more time to recover and adjust to life with two new family members.

After birth

Breastfeeding twins is certainly possible. Your body is able to produce enough milk for both babies, although it can be challenging at times. Support from a lactation consultant can be very valuable.

You are also entitled to longer maternity care for twins. The maternity nurse will not only help with the care of the babies, but also with light household tasks, so that you can concentrate on recovery and bonding with your babies.

Tips for expectant twin parents

Being pregnant with twins is both exciting and challenging. It is important to be well informed and to seek support where necessary. Here are some tips:

  • Preparation: Make sure you have everything ready for the arrival of two babies. This means twice as much of everything – from diapers to cribs.
