Calling instructions

When do you call the midwife during pregnancy?

There may be several reasons to contact us during pregnancy. For example, if you are worried, the baby is moving less (from 26 weeks) or you are not feeling well. In a number of situations we would like you to call the same day:

1. Blood loss

If you experience blood loss, it is very important that you call us on the same day. Even if you suspect you know the cause of the bleeding, such as coughing, heavy lifting, or sexual intercourse, we encourage you to contact us. This way we can assess whether an additional check-up in the hospital is required. Your health and well-being come first.

2. Not feeling well and upper abdominal pain

If you suffer from persistent headaches, with a feeling of pressure or tightness in the upper abdomen, which resembles a tight bra, and you notice that you see 'stars' and feel nauseous, then it is important to remember from 24 weeks of pregnancy to be aware of possible high blood pressure. If you recognize this combination of symptoms and paracetamol does not provide relief, we advise you to contact us the same day. Your health comes first, and we are ready to help you.

3. When the baby moves less

If you are 26 weeks pregnant and notice that the baby's movements are less frequent than usual, don't worry. This can happen sometimes, for example after a busy day. However, if you feel that the baby is moving significantly less than normal (not just less vigorously), we advise you to first lie on your left side for an hour and make contact with your baby by pushing gently. If the baby still does not respond after this hour or if you have any doubts, do not hesitate to contact us immediately. It is important to act immediately, rather than waiting until the next day. Your baby's well-being is our top priority.

4. If you lose fluid before 37 weeks or the baby has not yet descended

If you notice that you are losing fluid and suspect that it is amniotic fluid, do not hesitate to call us the same day. Amniotic fluid has a sweet, sickly smell and can trickle down your legs in small amounts. Although fluid loss can sometimes be caused by urine or residue from showering or bathing, this is usually not constant. So if you continue to lose fluid persistently, we recommend that you contact us immediately.

If a previous check-up revealed that the baby's head has not yet fully descended and your waters break, call us immediately. Regardless of the time, even in the middle of the night. Make sure you lie down and avoid climbing stairs.

5. If you have contractions before 37 weeks

If you think you are experiencing contractions and you are not yet 37 weeks pregnant, do not hesitate to call us immediately, even in the middle of the night. If labor starts before 37 weeks, it is essential that you give birth in the hospital. Your health and that of your baby are our top priority.

6. Vomiting a lot

It is common to experience nausea during pregnancy, a symptom caused by hormonal changes. In some cases, this nausea can lead to vomiting. Moreover, regardless of pregnancy, you can also simply suffer from the flu and vomit for several days.

It is important to remember that your baby will not have a nutritional deficiency if you are sick. The baby always gets the necessary nutrients. However, if you have persistent vomiting for more than 3 days and cannot even keep water or tea down, we advise you to contact us. Your well-being is of great importance, and we are ready to help you.

In short

Our team is always ready to support you during your pregnancy. If you experience any of the above symptoms, do not hesitate to call us immediately. Even when in doubt, we are here to answer your questions and guide you. Remember, no question is too strange. Your health and that of your baby are our top priority, and we are here to help.
