Flu shot during pregnancy: protection for you and the baby
Within our midwifery practice, we attach great importance not only to the health of you as an expectant mother, but also that of the future baby. Getting the flu shot during pregnancy is a topic that is often discussed during our consultation hours as midwives. Let's discover together why it is not only useful for you as an expectant mother, but also crucial for the protection of the newborn baby.
Why the flu shot during pregnancy?
Risks for Newborns
Newborn babies are at increased risk for serious consequences of flu, including hospitalization. The good news is that if the expectant mother receives the flu shot during pregnancy, the baby is significantly less likely to develop the flu from birth.
Possible consequences of flu during pregnancy
Flu can have serious consequences for both newborns and pregnant women. Babies can become seriously ill, sometimes so badly that hospitalization is necessary. Pregnant women with influenza are at increased risk of hospitalization, highlighting why preventative measures are essential.
How does the flu vaccination work?
After the flu vaccination, the pregnant woman's body produces antibodies against the flu virus. These antibodies pass to the baby via the placenta, protecting the baby against flu in the first months after birth. Moreover, the pregnant woman herself benefits from this protection. The vaccine itself does not reach the baby directly.
Is the flu shot safe during pregnancy?
The flu shot is safe for both the baby and the pregnant woman.
