Hello parents-to-be! Welcome to Midwives Lelystad, your trusted place in Lelystad. When you are expecting a baby, an exciting journey begins that sometimes also raises many questions. A theme that often comes up is the reimbursement of fertility treatments such as IVF and ICSIWe understand that this can be quite a puzzle, which is why we have created this clear guide to keep you well informed and give you peace of mind.
What exactly are IVF and ICSI?
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) are techniques to get pregnant if it doesn't work naturally. With IVF, they mix eggs and sperm outside your body, and then they put the fertilized egg back in your uterus. ICSI goes a step further - they inject one sperm cell directly into an egg cell. They are smart ways to start a pregnancy if it doesn't work otherwise.
What is included in your basic package?
Your basic insurance covers the first three IVF or ICSI attempts per pregnancy that continues – if you meet the rules. An “ongoing pregnancy” means that you are at least ten weeks pregnant from the egg retrieval.
Bonus: three chances – that gives you room to try, with a solid foundation under your feet.
Age and your compensation
There is an age limit – women up to 43 years old get IVF and ICSI reimbursed from the basic insurance. But you have to start before you are 43 – after that it expires.
More: Timing is key – it's good to know where you stand age-wise.
Embryos and your age
Are you under 38? Then they put back one embryo in the first two attempts, one or two in the third. Between 38 and 43 you can put back one or two embryos in all three attempts – your chances get a boost!
Extra: it is tailor-made – your age plays a role in how they approach it.
When is it an attempt?
An IVF attempt only counts if they do an egg retrieval – even if no good eggs come out. After an ongoing pregnancy, your counter resets – you get three more chances for a next child.
More: Every attempt is a new beginning – even after success you start fresh.
What about cryo?
A cryo treatment – replacing a frozen embryo – is part of the IVF attempt it came from. Within that attempt you can do multiple replacements without it being a new round.
Extra: Cryo is a bonus – it gives you extra chances within one attempt.
What do you need to arrange for reimbursement?
Your treatment must be in a clinic with an IVF/ICSI license – your GP or specialist will refer you. Make sure your insurer has a contract with that clinic, otherwise it may be less or not reimbursed.
IUI and your insurance
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is included in your basic insurance if there is a medical reason. For singles or lesbian couples there is a subsidy for IUI with donor sperm - a helping hand!
Deductible and additional costs
For fertility issues, you pay your own risk – in 2025 that will be €385. Some medications require a co-payment – ask your insurer what you will pay yourself.
Bonus: A little planning helps – that way you know what your wallet is feeling.
What about additional packages?
With additional insurance you can get extras – a fourth IVF/ICSI round, sperm freezing, or a second opinion. Note: they can check your health before you take such a package.
Abroad and compensation
Treatment abroad? First ask your insurer for the green light – the reimbursement may be different than here.
Egg donation and costs
With egg donation, they reimburse the treatment of the intended mother, not the donor – that is good to know.
Tax deduction
What your insurance doesn’t cover, you can sometimes deduct from your taxes – check with the tax authorities for an extra.
Where are you going?
Only special hospitals and clinics do IVF and ICSI – often your local hospital works with an IVF center. The fertilization and transfer go through that center. Make sure your insurer knows them, otherwise it may be less reimbursed.
More: you don't have to go far – a good centre is often close by and we'll help you find it!
Check with additional insurance
For extra insurance they can screen your health - also about fertility. If you are already in treatment, that can play a role - keep that in mind.
