Hello everyone! We, the midwives of Midwives Lelystad in Lelystad, often get curious questions about all kinds of treatments and methods. Today we put the spotlight on the cryo treatment. What does it entail, and in which situations is it useful? Let's discover it together!
A bit more: as midwives we want to explain everything clearly to you - from pregnancy to special care like cryo. We make it simple and useful!
What does cryo treatment mean?
Cryotherapy uses icy cold to freeze and ablate cells. “Cryo” comes from the Greek word “kruos,” meaning “ice cold” – perfect name! It has a wide range of uses, from treating skin blemishes to pain management and even a role in fertility care.
More info: It's a clever trick with cold – you can do so much with it, depending on what you need!
Cryo against pain
At the Deventer Hospital, they use cryo to reduce pain. They break the pain signals in a nerve with freezing via carbon dioxide. The doctor numbs your skin, inserts a special cryo needle, and with a small current they find the painful spot. Then they freeze that nerve – a fifteen-minute job. The cold stops the pain, but your feeling and muscle strength remain intact.
Bonus: It's a quick fix – you'll feel less without losing anything!
Cryo for your cervix
At the St. Antonius Hospital they help your cervix with cryo - for example if it bleeds quickly after sex. They insert a cold metal rod through your vagina against your cervix, cooled with liquid nitrogen. It feels a bit like menstrual pain, and you may see some discharge for weeks.
Extra: a small intervention with a big effect – your body heals itself.
Cryo in IVF/ICSI
At Isala Zwolle, cryo comes into play IVF and ICSI. Any good embryos that are left over, they freeze – they remove the water and cool them very quickly with liquid nitrogen. They can then thaw them and put them back, in a natural, artificial or stimulated cycle.
More: It's a smart backup – your embryos are waiting for the right moment!
What to consider after cervical cryo?
After a cryo-treatment of your cervix, there are a few things to watch out for. No tampons as long as you are bleeding or have discharge. You also skip sex, swimming or a bath until the bleeding stops. Do the complaints persist after six months? Go back to your clinic.
Possible bumps
Complications are rare. Shortly after the treatment, you will notice nothing unusual. In the long term, your mucus production can sometimes decrease – which can delay getting pregnant – or scar tissue can make your cervix hard during childbirth. But that hardly ever happens.
Extra: it's safe – your body can handle it well, with rarely any kinks in the cable.
When should I call?
Call your doctor if you experience heavy bleeding after cryo – more than a heavy period – or develop a fever. Better safe than sorry!
As you can see, cryo treatments are versatile – from treating pain to boosting chances of having a baby. We hope you now understand what it can do!
