Hello beautiful future parents! At Midwives Lelystad, located in De Koploper. we want to support you as best as possible with everything around your cycle, getting pregnant or not getting pregnant. Today we will take you through a natural approach: the Billings method. What is it, and how do you use it? In this blog we step into the world of the Billings method, so that you can see for yourself whether it suits you.
Just a little more: your body is a miracle, and with a method like this you get to know it even better – a great tool for your journey to parenthood or to postpone it for a while!
What is the Billings Method?
The Billings Method, also known as the cervical mucus method, is a natural way to spot your fertile days. It started in 1953, invented by Australian doctor John Billings. It involves checking your vaginal discharge – your cervical mucus – to see where you are in your cycle. By looking every day, you discover your own patterns and know when you are fertile.
More info: it's simple and all natural - you look at what your body tells you, without tools. A smart start to understand your cycle!
How does it work in practice?
The Billings Method involves monitoring how your cervical mucus changes – it reveals where you are in your cycle. Hormones control this, and by observing it, you discover your fertile moments. It’s a daily check to track your fertile days – you get to know your body like an open book.
Bonus: It's a bit of detective work – your slime is your clue, and you are the sleuth!
The four phases of your cycle
The Billings Method splits your cycle into four parts, each with its own mucus:
- Phase 1: After your period it is often “dry” – little or no mucus visible.
- Phase 2: Before ovulation it becomes watery and clear – your fertility is increasing.
- Phase 3: When you ovulate, your mucus peaks – it looks like egg whites: shiny, stretchy, slippery. This is your peak moment!
- Phase 4: After you ovulate, it drops – thicker, cloudy, less stretchy.
More: Each stage has its vibe – you'll learn exactly when your body is ready for action.
How do you see the difference?
It’s all about looking at your mucus – grab some with your fingers and check the colour, texture and how much it stretches. It takes a little while to get the hang of it, but after a few cycles you’ll feel like a pro. If you can make it into strings, it’s “go-time” if you’re trying to conceive – a sure sign you’re fertile!
Extra tip: it's an art – start simple and you'll get the hang of it quickly!
How reliable is it?
The Billings Method is great for learning your cycle, but it’s not a foolproof method of contraception. Stress, infections, or pills can alter your mucus, making it harder to spot your fertile days. Experts like Cyclecare don’t consider it a solid method of contraception – so don’t use it solo if you really don’t want a baby.
More: It's a guide, not a guarantee – combine it with something else to be sure.
A boost for getting pregnant
Do you want a baby? Then the Billings method is a smart helper. Finding your fertile days gives you a greater chance of hitting the mark. But it is not a magic wand – getting pregnant requires more. Are you not having success right away? Don't worry – we at Verloskundigen Lelystad are ready to help and advise you.
Bonus: It's a natural move – you'll know when your body is ready for a baby.
Your cervix as an extra hint
You can also check your cervix – it changes with you. Fertile? It feels soft and open. Not fertile? Harder and closed. It’s a bonus signal alongside your mucus.
Combine it with other tricks
The Billings Method mixes well with methods such as temperature. By combining mucus and temp, you get a solid picture of your cycle – an extra layer of insight!
More: It's teamwork – your body gives you multiple cues, and you grab them all.
What you get out of it
- Purely natural – no hormones needed.
- You know your body better.
- A boost when trying to get pregnant.
- Can be done anywhere – no equipment needed.
More: It's a simple, free way to understand your cycle – applicable anywhere!
What is less convenient
- Not super strong as contraception.
- It requires attention every day.
- It takes some time to understand.
- Stress or ailments can cloud it.
Bonus: it’s a commitment – you have to invest in it, but you get a lot in return.
Does it suit you?
Whether the Billings Method is your match depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to get to know your body naturally? Then this is a great opportunity. If contraception is less certain – then look further. At Verloskundigen Lelystad we see it as a cool way to understand your cycle – and why you sometimes have to have chocolate!
