Unique working method for Midwives Lelystad
At Midwives Lelystad we are known for the time we take for checkups and all your questions during pregnancy, but also for the extensive guidance during delivery and the postpartum period. As midwives, we know that every pregnancy is unique and that is why we adapt our care to your wishes and needs.
During your pregnancy
During your pregnancy, as (expectant) parents you will visit the midwife an average of 15 times. We ensure that you have all met us and see us again regularly, so that we can get to know each other optimally. The first appointment is when you are 7 weeks pregnant, because you come for a pregnancy early ultrasound. You will then come for a second ultrasound at 10 weeks. We try to schedule an appointment for the intake during the consultation hours of one of our midwives in the same week, even at 10 weeks. During this intake we will have many health questions and information about what pregnancy guidance will look like and we will tell you how you can arrange maternity care. After the first few appointments, you will initially come for a check-up every 4 weeks and from 24 weeks onwards you will come for a check-up every 3 weeks. From 30 weeks you will come for a check-up every 2 weeks and from 36 weeks even every week. This way you can get to know us even better in the last part before your delivery begins. That's nice for a relationship of trust, right? In the diagram below you can see roughly what is discussed per inspection and you know approximately when your inspections will take place:
7 weeks – Extra early ultrasound (15 minutes)
We understand that you would like to know early in your pregnancy whether your baby is doing well. That is why we offer an early ultrasound at 7 weeks as standard. If you ever have one miscarriage or are currently experiencing bleeding, the ultrasound will be reimbursed by your health insurer. Isn't this the case? Then we will reimburse the early ultrasound for you from our midwifery practice.
10 weeks – Ultrasound to determine due date (15 minutes)
Shortly after the early ultrasound you will have a second ultrasound. This ultrasound checks whether the baby is doing well and determines the final due date.
10 weeks – Intake with the midwife (60 minutes)
During the intake you will visit one of the midwives and you will be asked questions about your health and you will receive information about guidance during the pregnancy. It is useful if you come together with your partner, but it is not a problem if this does not work. The questions about your (in-law) family and partner can also be asked at a later time.
13 weeks – If desired: medical ultrasound (60 minutes)
If you wish, you can have an ultrasound scan made during this period to check the physical development of the baby.
14 weeks – Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
Check-up with the midwife: oa arrange maternity care is discussed.
15 weeks – If desired: gender determination ultrasound (30 minutes)
From 15 weeks you can have a gender determination ultrasound to check whether you are pregnant with a boy or girl! This is of course not mandatory.
18-20 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
You will have a standard check-up with the midwife: measuring blood pressure, external examination and also listening to the heartbeat.
20 weeks: If desired: a medical ultrasound (30 minutes)
You can have an ultrasound scan at 20 weeks to check your baby's development.
24 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
At 24 weeks we do the standard checks and provide you with information about which signs you can recognize if you develop high blood pressure during your pregnancy. This way you know exactly when to call us.
27 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
At 27 weeks we do the standard checks and provide you with information about the baby's movement pattern and when this might be too little. This way you know exactly when to call us. We also tell you that you can now take a blood test to determine your iron levels and when rhesus are negative to see if there are antibodies in your blood. Sometimes it is necessary to do a sugar test during pregnancy, this is between 24-28 weeks and can be combined with a blood test for your iron levels. You can have both tests carried out at 27 weeks, which we will remind you of.
30 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
At 30 weeks we do the standard checks and you will receive the blood test results and, if indicated (if you are rhesus D negative and the baby is rhesus D positive), an injection. If your iron is too low, we can prescribe iron medications.
30 weeks: Growth ultrasound (30 minutes)
If this is medically necessary, you will have the first growth ultrasound at 30 weeks.
32 weeks: Growth ultrasound
If this is medically necessary, you will have the second growth ultrasound at 32 weeks.
34-35 weeks: Midwife check + birth plan and childbirth information (30 minutes)
If you are 34 or 35 weeks pregnant, we will do the standard checks and discuss when you know that labor has started and what you need to arrange in advance. If you have made a birth plan, we can go through it together during this conversation to ensure that your wishes are clear to everyone.
35 weeks: Position ultrasound (15 minutes)
To ensure that the baby is lying with its head down and not accidentally with its buttocks, you will have an ultrasound scan for the position at 35 weeks. When necessary, the growth of the baby are measured.
36-37 weeks: Check with midwife (20-30 minutes)
From 36 weeks onwards you will come to our consultation hours every week and we will carry out standard check-ups. This way you get to know all the midwives even better in the last part before the birth and we can build a bond of trust.
37 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
We do the standard checks and extra check whether the baby has descended properly.
38 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
We do the standard checks and extra check whether the baby has descended properly.
39 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
We do the standard checks and extra check whether the baby has descended properly.
40 weeks: Midwife check (30 minutes)
We do the standard checks, feel the descent and give you information about the next 2 weeks. For example, we will tell you that you have the option of stripping, if labor has not yet started spontaneously. This gives you the best chance of a spontaneous birth and we try to avoid induction of labor in the hospital.
41 weeks: Midwife check (20-30 minutes)
We do the standard check, feel the descent and if you would like to be stripped we can do that during this check. You will also meet the gynecologist in the hospital this week, in case you have not yet given birth at 42 weeks. It is the last check-up at our midwifery practice: the next time you see us will be during the maternity week when the baby is born!
During your birth
The birth can take place in different places: at home in your own environment, in the birth home or in the hospital if there is no medical indication (we call this outpatient). Whatever place of birth you choose, we will always guide you. Whether you choose to have a birth in the bath, on a birthing stool or in another way, we are trained to guide you in everything. If the birth would still be medical, for example because you would like medical pain relief (epidural or remifentanil), we will transfer the care to the midwives of the hospital with whom we work closely.
If you are not sure whether labor has started, you can always consult with one of us by telephone. There is no assistant, so you always have direct contact with the midwife: even in the evenings/nights and weekends. We always work in 24-hour shifts, so there is the greatest chance that one midwife will be present at your birth. In the unlikely event that there is a double birth, there is always another colleague who can supervise the second birth, so that your own midwife can usually stay.
Our team of midwives is very close and we meet regularly to catch up. In addition, we always discuss your wishes, such as for the birth. If you have a birth plan made, this will be reviewed so that all midwives are aware of this. If the birth is transferred to the hospital, we always try to go with you and personally make the transfer to the hospital midwife. We will also indicate your birth plan.
During and after your maternity period
At Midwives Lelystad we are of course also happy to guide you after the birth of your baby. In the first week we come by about three to five times for maternity visits. For example, we will come by the day after the birth to check how your first night was and how the feeding is going. We have good cooperation with the maternity nurse. We also come by to check with the maternity nurse to check whether everything is going well. If you have any questions or concerns, you can of course contact us. We give you advice about breastfeeding or bottle feeding and if necessary we can always consult with the lactation consultant. If you gave birth in the hospital, we will visit you as soon as you can go home again. If you, or the baby, for example, need to be admitted to hospital for a longer period of time, we will visit you at the hospital so that you still see a familiar face and can ask questions.
