A smooth start to the maternity week

Regulation matters

The maternity week is a unique and often busy period, and there are some important things you need to arrange and be aware of. Here are some of these regulations and deadlines to keep in mind:

1. Birth registration

You must report the birth to the municipality where the birth took place within three days of the birth of your child. This is an essential administrative step that you must arrange yourself. Make sure you have the necessary documents at hand, such as IDs and birth certificates. Sometimes you can register the birth digitally, this varies per municipality. Was your child born during the weekend? The weekend counts as 1 working day.

2. Recognition

If you are not married or do not have a registered partnership, it is important to have the recognition of your child. This can take place before or after birth, but it is important to arrange this in time.

3. Health insurance

Don't forget to add your newborn baby to your health insurance. This can usually be done within a few months of birth, but it is wise not to delay it. Consult your health insurer for specific instructions and deadlines. In order to register with the health insurance, you first need your child's BSN, which you will receive by post a few days after birth.

4. Heel prick and hearing test

The heel prick and hearing test are carried out by the health clinic (JGZ). The maternity care can help you with registration if you want to take advantage of this screening (it is not mandatory).

5. Intake consultation agency

Within the first ten days after birth, Youth Health Care (JGZ) will visit your home (or by telephone in the case of a second child) for the intake. They will take over the care of your baby as soon as the maternity week ends by us as midwives.

Although maternity week can be a busy time, it is crucial to make these arrangements in a timely manner. If you have any questions or need assistance in arranging these matters, do not hesitate to contact your midwife, maternity nurse or other healthcare providers. They are ready to guide you during this special period.
